CONFERENCES @ AIT

1. Comprehensive Water Resources Management,

a training activity be hosted under the MTERM/Danida-AIT Cooperation Program from 1-12 October 2001 at the JICA Computer Training Studio, SCE.

The fifteen training participants come from Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Sri Lanka, and Viet Nam.

The lectures and discussions will highlight, among other topics, the following: (1) River Basins Planning and Management; (2) River Basin Modeling Tools; (3) GIS and its Applications; (4) Urban Drainage Management; (5) Irrigation Planning and Management; (6) Wastewater and Watershed Management; (7) Institutional Aspects of Water Resources Management; and (8) Flood Mitigation and Management.

2. Business Excellence Model: Indian Environment for Global Competitiveness,

a seminar to be conducted by Prof. Prem Vrat, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi on Wednesday, 3 October 2001, 1:30 p.m. in room 108 (SOM Conference room)

3. IT-Enabled Supply Chain Management for Enhanced Competitiveness,

a seminar to be conducted by Prof. Prem Vrat, IIT Delhi on Thursday, 4 October 2001, 1:30 p.m. in room 106, Chalerm Prakiat (ISE) building.

All ISE students are required to attend. Interested persons are welcome.

4. Coastal Zone Management in Cambodia,

a seminar to be given by Mr. Gorm Jeppesen, a Senior Adviser of the Danida-CZM Project in Cambodia, on Friday, 5 October, from 9-11 am, at AFE/AASE Bldg. Room A216.

Danida, under the Environmental and Disaster Relief Facility (EDRF), initiated its support to the Project Environmental Management in the Coastal Zone: Cambodia, in May 1997. The first phase of the Project developed a long-term support strategy for coastal zone management (CZM) in Cambodia. Included in the process was capacity building in basic CZM skills and establishing a baseline of physical and socio-economic information on the coastal zone of Cambodia. The project, currently on its second phase, is aimed at improving living conditions of the coastal population through sustainable use and development of the coastal zone. Three components are being addressed: a) policy, legal and institutional framework; b) planing and environmental management; and c) pilot projects on community-based resource management.

Mr. Jeppesen is a biologist by profession and currently a Senior Biologist Project Manager, Department of Ecology and Environmental Management, DHI Water & Environment, Denmark. He is the Resident Chief Technical Advisor of the Environmental Management in the Coastal Zone: Cambodia Project (Phase 2). He holds an M.Sc. (Biology) from the University of Copenhagen and is trained in EDP, shrimp hatchery operations, SCUBA and environmental protection.

5. Workshop on Gender, Environment and Urbanization in Asia

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UNCHS) have been working in partnership since January 1998 to coordinate and carry out the activities of the Urban Management Programme (UMP) in the Asia and Pacific Region. The UMP-AIT Partnership, consisting of AIT's academic units, namely GenDev (Gender and Development Studies) and UEM (Urban Environment Management), is organizing a workshop on Gender, Environment and Urbanization in Asia. This will be held from 9-10 October 2001 at room B144, AIT Conference Center.

The objective of the workshop is to look into issues concerning gender and environment in urban development and environmental management in Asia. Further, the workshop will concentrate on sharing experiences and lessons learned from one-year of conducting city consultations for action planning in five Asian cities, namely Semarang, Phnom Penh, Yala, Leshan and Vientiane. This can be a learning experience for AIT’s future urban planners/managers as well.

Prof. M. Tabucanon, Provost, will open the workshop. The program includes panel discussions on Environmental and Gender Concerns in Urban Management followed by Overview of Experiences in City Consultation and Lessons Learned. The panelists are: Prof. Yap Kieo Sheng, Dr. Bernadette Resurreccion, and Dr. Willi Zimmermann.

6. International Institute of Industrial and Manufacturing Culture Conference (IMAC2001),

to be hosted by AIT with support from the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), the Advanced Technology Forum, and the Industrial Systems Engineering Program, on 11 - 12 October at AIT.

The organizing committee headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Voratas Kachitvichyanukul, SAT faculty member, has put together a very exciting and stimulating program. The conference speakers are Prof. Yoshimi Ito, Emeritus Professor from the Tokyo Institute of Technology; Prof. Shin'ichi Warisawa of the University of Tokyo; Prof. Klaus Ruth of the Univesity of Bremen; Prof. Karl-Heinz Leist of the Technical University of Munich; Prof. Jun Sakai of MTEC; and Prof. Athapol Noomhorm of AIT.

Participation in this conference is by invitation only and seats are limited.

7. Environmental Indicators,

a seminar to be given by Dr. Trine Jensen on 11-12 October 2001, 2-4 pm, room 216 AASE (AFE) building. Dr. Trine Jensen is from the Department of Policy Analysis, National Environmental Research Institute (NERI), Denmark. NERI is part of the Danish Consortium which has a twinning arrangement with AIT-ITCZM under the Danida Special Program.

The seminar on Environmental Indicators will cover such topics as the rationale of using indicators and when can they be used, different types of indicators, and the selection of appropriate indicators for specific purposes. The seminar will also cover the use of indicators as tools in evaluating policy objectives.

Dr. Jensen will also give a similar seminar to the Pollution Control Department of the Thai Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in Bangkok in the morning of 12 October.

8. Quality Assurance for Training and Higher Education Institutions

The Continuing Education Center will organise a seminar on Quality Assurance for Training and Higher Education Institutions on Wednesday, 17 October 2001 during 13:30 - 15:30 hrs at Rm. B206, AIT Conference Center. The presentation will be on application of quality assurance principles and practices in planning and management of training and higher education programs and the challenges of quality assurance implementation and management.

The presenter, Dr. Zuraidah Mohd Zain, is a Quality Coordinator of the Quality Bureau, University Science Malaysia (USM) and one of the Chief Quality Officers of ASEAN University Network. She holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Studies from University of Liverpool, UK.
